SpineOut : June - July 2018
Shantelle, Year 8 Academy of Mary Immaculate Fitzroy Vic SSHORT STORIES pine Out JUNE / JULY 2018 The Disappontment You always find a way to disappoint me, don’t you, Stee?’ Steve tried to stay still and wondered how? For the past three months, he had worked hard, non-stop for this exam. But, it wasn’t good enough. He sat in silence, listening to his father ramble on and on about how he should stop baseball and study more. ‘You’re a disgrace to the family! You’re no son of mine!’ Steve’s eyes widened, and anger raced through his body. How could he say that to him? Without any hesitation, Steve shot up and swung his hand across his father’s face. He trembled in fear. What had he done? ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to.’ He begged for mercy, however, it was too late. His father stomped out and slammed the door. He was gone. Tears poured out from his eyes as he fell onto the hard floor. Twenty years later. Steve banged his hands on the wooden table. ‘You need to do better, Jake. This is not acceptable!’ he yelled. ‘You can’t just fail maths class and achieve in all the others!’ He couldn’t just stand and watch his son become another ’weak link’ in the family. Jake needed to be the best. He had to. In an act of frustration, Steve walked out of the room and into the kitchen. As he opened a bottle of beer he mumbled, ‘Way to go Steve! You’re a failure,’ before gulping down the cold beer. All Steve could think of was his father. How selfish he was to walk out the door and leave him. He was furious. Moments later, Jake walked in. ‘You could have a chat with my teacher,’ Jake quietly proposed. After a moment of silence, Steve placed the bottle down, and nodded. The next day, Steve arrived at the teacher’s office. He knew exactly what he was going to say, and was prepared for anything.
