SpineOut : June - July 2018
Shantelle, Year 8 Academy of Mary Immaculate Fitzroy Vic SSHORT STORIES pine Out JUNE / JULY 2018 The Disappointment ‘Mr Smith’ it read on the door. He paused. Why does that name sound so familiar, he wondered. ‘Never mind,’ he said before he entered the room. ‘Good afternoon, Mr Smith. I ...’ Steve stopped, and stared in horror. He couldn’t believe his eyes. Was that really him? Speechless, he took a seat and sat down. He tried to stay still but no matter what, Steve couldn’t stop his hands from shaking. As the minutes went by, he tried to speak, but he kept on confusing his words. Mr Smith screamed impatiently, ‘SPEAK UP STEE!’ That was when it hit him. Steve shouted in his face about how it wasn’t right to just walk out of his life and leave. Mr Smith stared at him, with his eyes wide open and his chest heaving up and down. ‘You’re a failure and so is your son. There’s nothing you can do about it.’ Steve lost control. He didn’t want to hear anything else his father was going to say. He wanted to make sure that he would get rid of anything that would get in the way of Jake’s success. That night, as Mr Smith walked to his car, he felt something strange. The air was cold and the parking lot lights flickered weirdly. Everything was quiet. Too quiet. He felt as if someone was watching his every move. Unlocking the door, he noticed a pair of eyes glaring at him. It seemed like they came from behind. Terrified, he swiftly turned around and punched whatever was in front of him. However, nothing was there. He shivered. Suddenly a baseball bat swung right at his head. And in a blink of an eye, Mr Smith was dead. Steve arrived home, late at night. He strolled into the living room whistling a happy tune. He noticed Jake sitting on the couch, so he walked towards him. ‘You know what, Jake ... I think your grades in Maths will really start to improve now,’ he grinned as he placed his bat against the wall.
