SpineOut : October 2014
Where I’m from I am from smart Navy uniforms and the crisp, cold air of dawn service ceremonies. I am from the smell of the airport, the one squeaky wheel of my favourite suitcase and the building roar of the engines, revving as the plane moves forward inch by inch, quickly picking up the pace. I am from hot chocolate on a deserted beach watching the dolphins playing in the pink and gold water of a stunning sunrise as my dogs chase seagulls on the rocks, From smells of home-cooked meals and photos dotting the walls I am from a big backyard, the bouquet of flowers on the dining room table and incense wafting through my bedroom door as the soft music plays on a Sunday morning. I am from fun half-birthdays and a life filled with love, from annoying little brothers, warmth and comforting smell of a grandparent’s hug and unconditional love and support from perfect parents. I am from the sarcastic jokes, yummy hot lunches and sitting in the quad with my funny little group of friends, From, 'Don’t yell in the house,' and 'Go play outside.' I’m from Sydney and Cairns, from spicy Malaysian laksa and spit roasted pig. From the swimming with whales off an rusty old boat, the swarms of fish darting in and out of the pretty coral and the sparkling blue eyes of my wonderstruck brothers. I am from the memory box way up on the top shelf of my wardrobe, holding precious times and treasured people. Patiently waiting for the day when it will be re-discovered and laughter and tears will be shed over its yellowing pages.
