The effervescent Dave Hackett aka Cartoon Dave presented his new book The Summer of Kicks to us (we are in Year 8 and 9). We were treated to some writing and drawing techniques to help create characters for our stories and ways to alter the plot and keep our audience entertained. Dave graciously showed off his drawing skills by drawing a picture of Chloe’s dog and entertaining us by making up a story about Chloe as he went. We thoroughly enjoyed Dave’s wonderful way of storytelling and cartooning. Dave Hackett recently visited Sunshine Beach State High School, Qld, to chat about his fabulous new book, The Summer of Kicks. The students had a wonderful time hearing about the book, getting some writing tips and Dave was kind enough to even draw for them. He’s very talented! An accidental band. A record store. A pair of shoes and two perfect girls. This is going to be one hell of a summer. Starrphyre is your average dorky 16-year-old, although with one difference. He has a very weird girly name, thanks to his hippy parents – a live-to-air radio sex therapist mum and a bass player dad from a tragic one-hit-wonder 80s metal band. A long hot summer stretches ahead of Starrphyre and all he wants is one date with his dream girl, Candace McAllister. But how can he get her to notice him when she’s the star of every other high school guys’ fantasies? Perhaps starting a band with his video-game obsessed pals will do the trick ...
