The Lennon Wall Our cover for this month features a graffiti wall from Prague in the Czech Republic. It’s called the Lennon Wall, and is a tribute to John Lennon, singer-songwriter and co-founder of the Beatles. Scrawled across the wall are lyrics from his songs and graffiti that celebrates his life and quest for world peace. John Lennon was determined to spread his anti-war message, and the American government even tried to deport him for speaking out against the Vietnam War. He was murdered in 1980 in New York. His songs still play on our radios today, especially his iconic anthem of peace Imagine. The wall is owned by the Knights of Malta, who allowed the graffiti to continue on the wall. On 17 November 2014, the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution (the non-violent transition of power in what was then Czechoslovakia which ended 41 years of Communist rule), the wall was painted over in pure white by a group of art students, leaving only the text ‘wall is over’, a play on Lennon’s song War is Over. g GRAFFITI
