Maths guru and all-round fun guy, Adam Spencer is here to show you that yes, numbers are very cool. n this extract from his latest book, Big Book of Numbers you'll see just how fascinating they can be! MATHEMATICS Whilst studying for a PhD in Pure Mathematics at the University of Sydney, Adam won a national stand-up comedy competition and went into radio. Over 15 years, two successful breakfast gigs on the national youth radio network Triple J and the much more grown up ABC Sydney, followed along with a television career on shows as diverse as The Drum (news and current affairs), The Back Page (Sports analysis), Good News Week (Comedy), Sleek Geeks (Science comedy) and Australia's most watched television Poker show. Now he returns to his original geeky passion for numbers. Who is Adam Spencer? Why did he write this book? When I was about 6 my parents bought me a book called 'Oddities'. I still have it. It was a collection of mathematics, word games and general, I guess, oddities and I loved it. There were things I understood straight away and other things I can still remember feeling 'I don't quite get that but I can't wait until I do'. Well in many ways this is my version of that book. A collection of maths, science, pop culture, history and general 'oddness' to enthuse young minds and entertain and educate the curious of all ages.
