Oliver, Age 14 Padua College Brisbane Qld Book Reviews e And Shady Robert Verlander Vivid Publishing T he book follows the story of Michel White and his struggle through adolescence. Throughout the book Michel discovers more and more about his recently deceased grandfather ‘Tick Tock’ (as he was known) and his confusion to why his grandfather has left him his fortune. The novel flicks back and forth from Michel’s point of view to ‘Shady Greens’, (the long lost friend of Tick Tock). But the story also follows Michel’s life through high school and his search to find ‘Miss Dead Right’ and fit in. Michel is confused about the development of his body, and worried that he’ll never develop the proper features of a man that are portrayed by his tall, broad friend Gerry. For me the book had a lot of flash backs to keep up with and took a while to settle into. I would recommend this book for teenagers and above as at times it details sexual references that might be confronting for younger readers. Overall I think I would rate this book three out of five stars and would definitely recommend it for ‘book clubs’ as it would be a good story to discuss. Passenger Alexandra Bracken Disney-Hyperion P assenger by Alexandra Bracken, is about a girl called Etta who is thrust into an unknown time, where she has to discover and solve the secrets of her mother and the interlocking Traveller families, Ironwood and Linden. I do admit that at the start it lost me, the talk about violins and performing made me almost put the book down. However once Etta is pulled back to 1776 and meets Nicholas, the story takes off. The plot follows an unusual and unique theme of time travelling throughout the past using ‘passages’. It follows Etta and Nicholas as they travel through history, hiding and searching for the object that has the power to destroy everything Etta has ever known. A bonus was the interchanging points of view. They gave me a glimpse of what Etta and Nicholas were thinking as well as their feelings for each other. Passenger was an amazing read for me once I got into it. It kept me hooked because the majority of the book was captivating and fascinating even though the start was a bit slow. I was happy to finish this 500 page book in a day and it was definitely worth my time.
