Book reviews Ruined Amy Tintera Allen & Unwin ‘I don’t think this is who I want to be.’ Ruined is a novel that follows useless Ruined Royalty Emelina Flores and her plan to get revenge on the people who killed her family, kidnapped her sister and now are in the process of making her people, The Ruined, extinct. As the synopsis states, her plan is simple but, as a typical YA novel, nothing can just go according to plan, which is great for me as the reader. During Ruined, Amy Tintera creates a vast diversity of characters and relationships in the midst of making a fast- paced, badass fantasy novel that would be a good fit for people into series such as ‘The Throne of Glass’ series. As someone who loves fantasy, but is just getting back into the genre (as in a fantasy-reading slump – oh no!), I would highly recommend this one. If you’re interested be sure to get your hands on it! Rating: A bit above Awesome 8.8/10 Ebony, Year 10 Montrose Bay High School Hobart Tas Liquidator Andy Mulligan David Fickling Books Liquidator is an adventure/ thriller best suited for a teenage or young adult audience. It has a gripping storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The book really taps into your emotions, pulling you into the story and making you feel the dread, suspense and sorrow that the characters feel. The book’s layout is different from others. It tells the story from many points of view. Vicky, for example, would tell a part of the story from her point of view then another character would either continue from there or tell what was happening at the same time. Sometimes this made it hard to understand. But overall Liquidator was an engaging read. Rating: Awesome Jenna, age 12 Central Coast Grammar School Erina Heights NSW
