AmeliaFArtSmart My artwork aims to convey the social justice issue of racial segregation through a variety of tones, colours and symbols. The orange/red marigolds symbolise the people who have been segregated and are suffering because they don’t have equal rights. I chose Marigolds because they’re flower meaning is grief. The thorns are a physical symbol for segregation, similar to a wall. On the other side of the thorns are the buttercups, representing the people in power, using their ‘privilege’ to inflict suffering on the other group. Buttercups’ flower meaning is ‘riches’ which is directly related to the abundant wealth and resources they had and weren’t sharing. My artwork inspiration mainly came from the racial segregation in America between the way the white people treated the black people. This is shown through the black and white colours of the background; white behind the buttercups and black behind the marigolds. I added little bits of light pink behind the buttercups to show their ignorance regarding the marigolds’ troubles (‘rose-coloured glasses’). I wanted to show racial segregation from two perspectives where the audience is able to interpret the subtle symbolism and consider segregation and oppression in the modern world. A Brush with Art
