Taylah, age 17 Assisi Catholic College Upper Coomera Qld Adventurous Spirit Heather Hawkins Murdoch Hawkins tells her personal story of how she drastically changed her life. At age 41 Hawkins was diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer. This sudden development completely turned her life upside down, and she quickly realised that her once content life abruptly craved adventure. After 17 marathons and three ultramarathons, Hawkins found herself winning the world’s coldest marathon in the North Pole, and partaking in seven marathons within seven days on seven different continents. Hawkins tells her marvellous and extraordinary achievements, as well as her struggles in Adventurous Spirit. A This account entices us to feel inspired and invites us to review whether we are living our lives to the fullest. Hawkins states, ‘I’m not running away from anything, but towards a goal, something bigger than myself.’ This creates a sense of complete admiration for Hawkins, and allows us to feel motivated and wanting to make an impact on life. Adventurous Spirit expresses family support and relationships, as well as tragedy and change. The use of images from Hawkins’s travels strongly improve the book. I found this book completely captivating and left me hanging onto Hawkins’s numerous adventures, cheering at her success and dedication. Although this style of writing is not my usual genre, I was completely amazed and left in awe by Adventurous Spirit. With diverse and unique characters, along with excellent, entertaining writing, this book helps the reader to dive into Munro’s head and view his gripping perspective and struggle with the voice in his head.
