Chelsea, age 17 Fraser Coast Libraries, Qld Page one I SON & DAUGHTER n the beginning, there was silenc children cried, because there were none. The darkness was everything and nothing. From within the darkness came a light. The light carried with it hope and dreams and wonder. Dreams of what was to come, hope for the future and wonder at it all. The light started out small. It began to create and fill the darkness. First it made the stars to wish upon. Next the moon to show when it was time for dreaming. It made the sea and mountains, animals and plants. The light was proud of its creation and created more. Last but not least it made man to wonder at all it had made. But soon the light began to grow tired of its little creation and vanished, leaving them to wonder what they had done to deserve abandonment. Left to dream of where it had gone and hope it would return. Thousands of years passed with the moon watching by night and the stars by day. They cared for the world in the absence of the light. They watched as the ‘men’ tore each other apart in order to find favour with the absent light. They named the light God, Allah and many other things. Each nation of men had a different name for the light and each believed themselves to be right. SSHORT STORIES pine Out r OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2017 ched and waited for them to see sense. They did not. Not for a hundred, hundred years. It was then they decided to act, to send a champion to the earth and remind the men that they had not been abandoned, at least not by them. The champion of the stars took a form familiar to man. His body was that of a lion with a fiery mane. His eyes were kind and he taught dignity and integrity. His gift was fire, one that burned hotter than any man had made. The Moon’s hero took on the form of a beautiful maiden. She was as virtuous as she was fair. She taught compassion and how to love from the bottom of the heart. Her gift to the world was a child to care for the creation and all its inhabitants. She would give the child to a family. They did not have to be rich, in fact she would prefer they knew only fields, hard work and honest labour. They would raise the child to be honest and kind. The champions of the stars and moon descended. A maiden upon a lion of fire. Carrying the pure energies of the first creations, they radiated abundance. Village by village they ventured across the world, telling the tale of the light, the stars and the moon and seeking a home for the child.
