SpineOut : February - March 2019
SSNEW BOOKS pine Out FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019 Renée: I wanted to write about friendship. How friendship heals us, challenges us, anchors us. Watch Us Rise is definitely about girls raising their voices to stand up for what they believe in, but at its core it is about the loyalty between two friends who support each other and love each other with a fierce love. Ellen: Renée and I have been close friends and co-workers for over a decade and that relationship is so important to me. I wanted to craft a book that celebrates and honors this kind of partnership. What is your favourite YA book? R: A recent favourite title of mine is Calling My Name by Liara Tamani. E: The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo & Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? R: Writers have to be good listeners. Good storytelling is not about what the storyteller has to say but more about what the storyteller has observed. My advice to aspiring writers is to become good at listening, at taking the world in. Pay attention when you are walking and watch how people interact, watch the news, listen to all types of music and most importantly, read. E: Yes - the first thing is to read as much as possible! You should read within and outside of the genre you like to write in - read poetry collections, YA, memoirs, non-fiction, literary fiction, comic books, magazines, newspapers, and on and on. What’s your favourite writing snack? R: Chai and a sweet pastry E: Coffee & more coffee & anything salty (chips, mixed nuts, cheese & crackers) WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND WRITING THIS BOOK?
