S After reading the review of Steven Hendrick’s book The Bogan Mondrian we thought we’d find out who this ‘Mondrian’ fellow was. And to our surprise we discovered he is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. He’s famous for his abstract style painting, using only three primary colours, red blue and yellow, interspersed with horizontal and vertical black, grey or white lines. You’ve probably seen prints of his work in galleries or libraries or even in your doctor’s or dentist’s surgery. Piet Mondrian was born in 1874 in the Netherlands and died in New York in 1944. Early in his career he started painting in a cubist style and became interested in the new art movement in Paris. He left his home in the Netherlands, and the woman he was going to marry, and moved to Paris. This turned out to be a good decision as his fame started to spread around many cities in the world. We think he must have been a fun guy as he loved to dance, not the slow traditional dances like the waltz or tango but really fast ones. He even called one of his abstract paintings after a popular dance, the Broadway Boogie Woogie! SNEW BOOKS pine Out FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019 CHECK OUT PIET’S BROADWAY BOOGIE WOOGIE WHO IS PIET MONDRIAN?
