SNEWS pine Out FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019 HOT OFF THE PRESS FUN & NOT SO FUN FACTS As Captain Flinders and Trim were sailing around Australia, a French Captain Baudin was doing the same only the other way around. But he didn’t come with his cat, he brought his pet monkey! Just before Matthew sailed for Australia, he married Ann, the love of his life. He asked the British authorities if he could take her with him but said NO! So what did he do? He smuggled her on board and hid her. But not very well! She was discovered and forced off. Poor Ann had to wait 11 years to see him again. Although Flinders never used his own name for any places in all his discoveries. But Flinders’ name is now associated with over 100 geographical features and places in Australia including Flinders Island in Bass Strait but not Flinders Island in South Australia, which he named for his younger brother, Samuel Flinders.
