ANTIGONE Yea r 9 Caringbah High School NSW OLIVER Age 13 Salesian College, Chadstone VIC Rating: awesome Rating: I rate it awesome and good for book clubs. It is an exciting action- packed book and I’m sure you’ll love it. FELICITY Year 10 Santa Maria College, Northcote VIC EMILIO Sophie Masson & Lyn White Everyone knows how much impact a mother has on her child’s life. But what if your mother was taken away from you – kidnapped for ransom by a drug gang? How much does that impact change? From the ‘Through My Eyes’ series comes a compelling and gripping book about a 13-year-old’s journey through Mexico City in search of his mother. Emilio is the fourth book in this powerful and moving series. This book invites readers into the world of children living in contemporary war zones and Emilio’s story is set in Mexico. This new series was created to show the inspiring and mind-opening stories of children living in areas that are destroyed by war and conflict. Emilio is such an exhilarating and moving book, which keeps you gripped until the very end. There are so many parts in the book where you witness different sides of Emilio. His brave side – to find his mother and the determination that drives him to make sure he will stop at nothing to find her; his vulnerable side – the side that misses his mother and longs to have her back; and the scared side. The emails and text messages from the drug gang say that they have her hostage, but will only release her once their instructions have been closely followed. It’s a long rollercoaster ride for not only Emilio but also his family who help out in this time of devastation. Police officers and pocket-thieves also play their part within the story and help build the storyline of the book. Clues and hints are left along the way to show the whereabouts of Emilio’s mother – but can the family find who took her and get her back? And if they find her – will she be the same? THE CONFUSION OF PRINCES Garth Nix The Confusion of Princes is an exciting book which immerses the reader in a new world run by the Empire. I thought the book gave an amazing glimpse into the world and as I flipped each page, I was left wondering what would happen to Khemri, the main character in this book. Khemri’s view on this world gives us the perspective of an important, partially robotic boy. The book is an autobiography of the life of Prince Khemri, who tells his tale of his three deaths. Overall it is an interesting book although sometimes it is not clear as to what is happening. The mysteries of Crooked Leg Road begin with Andrea encountering a group of strange men behind David’s house. From this point onwards the mystery and suspense starts to escalate, captivating readers and causing them to need to read on. The next main event in the novel is David’s disappearance. His friends are unsure about what has happened to him, and his family won’t give much away. Though, the new boy, Skender, may have something to do with David’s sudden disappearance. David’s friends start exploring, bringing the reader along with their adventures. This novel is full of love, drama, mystery, adventure, and exploration of relationships. The novel explores how multicultural Australia is, as the characters in the novel are accepting and appreciative of different cultures. CROOKED LEG ROAD Jennifer Walsh Allen & Unwin Rating: decent
